The original Scooby shelter

The second floor of this warehouse was the original Scooby refuge. Dedicated volunteers cared for galgos in a small area without heat or running water. When the roof started to fall in, the municipal authorities suggested they start wearing hard-hats! Groups from other European countries came to the rescue and the current refuge was built.

The new Scooby

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and donors, the new Scooby opened in 2000. This is the outside of one end of the refuge.

Isolation runs

Scooby has 8 large isolation runs for new arrivals, as well as 5 smaller runs. Newly arrived galgos and galgos with medical problems can be kept separately from the general galgo population. Once they have been "sterilized" and had the routine medical evaluation, they are moved into the general population.

Isolation sleeping area

Behind the runs, there are protected sleeping areas. Note the heating lamps and the donated beds and blankets.

Paddock area

Scooby has 7 paddock areas, including 4 for galgos that have been through the vetting and are ready for adoption. Note the dog houses.

Sleeping area

Galgos in the paddock area have a large, indoor, multi tiered sleeping area. They are well protected from the elements.

Food preparation area

The bulk of the food for the galgos consisted of donated bread and chicken parts. These were ground together to form a reasonable meal.

Food trough

Each area has its own feeding troughs. Here you see the food (bread and chicken parts) ground together.

Hall of adoptees

This hallway is filled with happy pictures of galgos now living in homes across Europe and a few in the US.
